Maruchi and Maríacarla, next to Alma Mater in the Publisher

Maruchi and Maríacarla together with the writing team in Alma Mater Publisher

Three Cuban women: the mother, the sister and the niece fight unfailingly for the freedom of Antonio Guerrero, one of the five Cuban prisoners in US.  All they, this three together with the other family women of the rest of the five, Fernando Gonzalez's, Gerardo Hernandez´s, Ramon Labañino´s and Rene Gonzalez´s,  demonstrate that there are many Marianas* in Cuba. Alma Mater invited two of them to it house.

Maria Eugenia and Maríacarla, (mother and daughter) they scored the date and the hour in which they would meet with Hilario Rosette, Alma Mater’s journalist that a time behind interviewed Mirta Rodriguez, Maria Eugenia’s mother,  Maruchi (as almost all call her) and Tony, Antonio Guerrero one of the five Cuban prisoners unfairly imprisoned in American jails.

According to the agreement the encounter would be on Thursday at midday in the April House Publisher, headquarters of the Magazine Alma Mater. The preamble was a Maruchi’s call to apologize because they would be delayed a little. Their daughter Maríacarla is in the pre-professional practical period, a subject that links the theory with the practice of the profession from the first year of any university career.  Maríacarla is exactly finishing her first semester of Psychology at Havana University.

They arrived at noon of this Thursday and for their surprise Hilario was not the only one that waited for them. This time they would not have to conquer only the scenic fear in front of the recording machine. An auditory full of workers of the Publisher wanted to be part of the interview that our Hilario –recording machine in hand –could manage. Just like that was exactly registered the interview to Tony’s sister and niece and the tone of their voices, knotted in the throat, when a word was pronounced.

They reviewed the nearest anecdotes, the support of the  solidarity movement,  the family climate, the communication with Tony, the last encounter among the siblings and between Tony and his son Tonito, UCI student (University for the Computer Sciences).

Mariacarla told us about his letters and messages sent to his uncle and  the dialogues about  the high school Vladimir I. Lenin, where both passed  their early youth,  his wish and  advice to her about being not only a studious girl, but amusing and  cheerful too.

She also told us how much she would have wanted him back home for her 15th birthday.  And how the manipulated judicial process, to which were subjected Tony and the other four antiterrorist Cubans fighters, impeded it. But the future psychologist does not loos the hope of a near reencounter.

There are many other special moments in life for them both and for the rest of the family, so that we won’t complain for not being together for a signal date. Maruchi already said, "earlier than late, I know won’t take a long time, justice will win in this so manipulated case in spite of the convenience of the powerful against Cubans groups, residents in Miami city".

Maruchi remembered anecdotes about their childhood, revolutionary formation received for them at home, her brother’s character, their mother Mirta stability, an example of woman.

Tony together with Maricarla, when she was still a girl

On occasion of their most recently visit to the jail with Tony’s son, last December, Maruchi knew about her brother’s new projects. From Cuba she helps searching for all the information necessary, to his cause, Tony’s judicial process and freedom, and the same for the rest of the Five, meaning for her family and especially for her the reason of their existence.

She also told us about a new series of drawings that Tony showed her, in which he works painting Cuban patriots. He also teaches Mathematical and Spanish lessons to other prisoners and some others want him to teach them also chess and painting.

The encounter with Maruchi and Mariacarla with April Publisher workers finished with the promises of telling Tony about the interest and support in favour of their fair fight. Alma Mater offered pleasant it pages to publish the message that Tony sent to the VII University Student Federation (FEU) Congress, in which are compared Cuban and American Universities.

This was the second meeting with the family of one of the Five in the April House Publisher. To the previous one assisted Irmita, the elder of the Rene Gonzalez´s daughters. In the next months, these encounters will continue with new voices claming for justice reborn.  Near to them our voices will be heard too.
