OUR CREED

By the President of the National Federation of University Students (FEU)

This is a moment of definition for Cuba. The 85th anniversary both of the Alma Mater Journal and the Federation of University Students (FEU) gets immerse in the tide of today, as it should be. Our creed is the one of the Cuban people, of the young people. Our questions are our creed.

In these times of remembrance and returning to history, to young people who matured in their early ages and gave everything, even life for what they believed in, it is worth to redefine the task we ought to do.

I quote Fidel by saying:

«What are the young people we want? Do we want young people who only concentrate in listening and repeating? No! We want young people capable of thinking. Do we want young people to be revolutionary just by imitating us? No! We want young people who learn to be revolutionary by themselves, who convince themselves and who fully develop their thought»Speech given by Fidel in the flight of stairs of the University of Havana on the Fifth anniversary of the events occurred on March 13th. .

I do not believe there is a better way of speaking for us. The future times and challenges of the Revolution need our generations’ creative initiatives. This Revolution does not need neither absolute antithesis nor dogmatic assimilation of the Cuban project.

Raúl has summoned us to the debate just after Fidel’s call in the Convocation Hall, or since we know that our problems can destroy us and that they are a time bomb. Although the FEU Congress made a great contribution in a certain moment of history, but not enough.

There have to be popular measures that tally with the state measures coming up from this debate, even if we do not wait for a previous request. Solutions won’t be definitive if they only come from or we expect them to come from the governmental framework. It is the task of socialism to socialize its own problems and to give solutions to them.

We, the university students, know how to demand to others and to ourselves, I mean, the revolutionary people should demand to others and to themselves. How much can we do to make suggestions and to defend what we have with a sincere commitment and with no naivety from which the enemy benefits from, an enemy that does exist and does harm?

We have to study so that what we speak be in accordance with science and be respected. We have to cultivate ourselves to feel safer. We need to have more concrete experiences that make us become better people and prevent us from having our heads in the clouds, from which rare theories come. We have to get close to good people who do good things, to share their experiences and not to feel alone. We have to write and share our ideas with other as much as we can. We have to overcome the obstacles, the lack of understanding and the slackness. We have to persevere in our purpose if we believe in everything we should and we want to do for our future.

We have to fulfill a task as heroic as others, without bullets or immolation. Its heroism lies in understand it and assume it day by day. Alma Mater and the FEU should continue to be the deans of a history of fight, the space for this common and distinctive challenge of today.
